In the following scriptures, Isaiah 61: 1-3, Isaiah tells of Messiah’s first coming:

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord God’s favor. And the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them a garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord God, the He may be glorified. (Isaiah 61:1-3)

According to PH.D. Arnold G. Fruchtenbaum author of The Life of Messiah From A Messianic Jewish Perspective – Volume Two, Isaiah 61:1-3 is “an example of the third type of messianic prophecy, where aspects of the first and second comings are blended into one picture, there being no indication in the text itself that there is a time gap between events, or that the prophecy actually refers to two comings. (pg 132)”

Looking at the events recorded by Luke, Isaiah’s prophetic time frame becomes apparent:

So He (Yeshua) came to Nazereth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went to the Synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. And he was handed a book of the prophet Isaiah. And when he opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Because He anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor: He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovering sight to the blind, To set liberty them that are bruised, To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.

Then He closed the book and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:16-21)

Notice how Yeshua stops in verse 61:2a before proceeding on with the “day of vengeance of our God” is spoken; thus separating the two periods of time He would use to fulfill Isaiah’s prophecy completely.

Yeshua was to first come on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9) before coming in a cloud (Daniel 7:13)

First Coming

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold your King is coming to you, He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. (Zechariah 9:9)

Second Coming

I saw the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion that will never pass away, and his kingdom that will not pass away. (Daniel 7:13-14)

Additional First Coming Prophecies

The Messiah would be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver – Zechariah 11:12-13

The Messiah’s body would be pierced – Zechariah 12:10

The Messiah would die for all humanity – Zechariah 13:7

Israel will be scattered for rejecting their Messiah – Zechariah 13:7

Born in Bethlehem = Micah 5:2

Rejected and Pierced – Isaiah 53:2-6

The stone the builders refused – Psalm 118:22

His Death will make Atonement – Daniel 9:26; Psalm 22:14-18; Isaiah 53:7-9
